Virtualisation & NGN

Virtualisation is a technique for creating a virtual, rather than an actual, version of a storage device or server.

It allows an enterprise to manage and present storage devices and resources functionally regardless of their physical layout or location. Multiple physical servers, for example can be viewed and treated as one single logical unit.

Virtualisation’s ability to deliver business value in the form of enhanced corporate agility, greater efficiencies and reduced environmental impact is well documented. And it is not surprising that virtualisation features as a strategic priority for CIOs across most market sectors in the UK.

When virtualisation is underpinned by the unique features of Exponential-e’s NGN, even greater value can be derived. The most important feature of our NGN in the virtualisation context is its layer 2 VPLS service layer delivered over MPLS. This VPLS service layer unites geographically-dispersed LANs into a single LAN-like WAN using a logical subnet or single broadcast domain. Here Ethernet is the highly familiar, simple and scalable interface.

So virtualised resource can be moved transparently around the WAN and deployed at different physical locations according to business need.

Our NGN brings the following virtualisation approaches within reach for your organisation:

  • Moving and replicating data to another physical location
  • Achieving location independence by abstracting the physical location of the data
  • Aggregation of physical storage into storage pools from which logical resources can be created
  • Low-latency mapping of physical and logical resources
  • High-availability computer clustering
  • Load balancing across server or PC clusters

If virtualisation is the technique for managing systems and resource functionality regardless of their physical location; then VPLS next generation networking is the service-oriented architecture which allows it to happen across the WAN.
