Exponential-e is unique in offering a carrier class, resilient, multi-tiered Internet solution. We have multiple geographically-dispersed IP gateways that interface with the core Internet backbone which is made up of multiple Internet Tier 1 providers. We have several connections directly to these individual IP gateways which are in geographically different locations. The advantage of us using a number of Tier 1 providers is that it means we are not reliant on any single global network, so, in the highly unlikely event of some Tier 1 providers failing, we could still maintain an Internet service to our customers. This way our customers receive the highest levels of service availability.
Route 1 is a proprietary piece of technology that sits on top of BGP routing and analyses the traffic passing through our Tier 1 providers. It performs real-time tests on each possible route the data could take to get to our customers’ desired destinations. It then routes the data via the pathway offering the best available performance on: response time, hop count, jitter and packet loss. Route 1 is unique to Exponential-e. Most providers use standard BGP routing alone, which only considers the number of network hops when making routing decisions.
Key benefits
- Our Internet service is not reliant on any one provider
- Guarantees a higher level of Internet performance
- Reduces connection times by 10-50%
- Route 1 is a complimentary addition to all of our Internet services
In essence, our Route 1 functionality allows us to be more intelligent in route selection. It enables detection of upstream congestion in a network so that packet loss levels can be brought back to zero. With standard BGP routing alone, this detection is not possible and, therefore, those providers who only use BGP cannot guarantee the same level of Internet performance that we can using Route 1.

“We had previously been considering a 10Mb SDSL connection. But for only an extra £150 per month we got an extra 90Mbps as well as the peace of mind that comes with delivery using fibre. Fibre connectivity meant we could avoid many of the performance issues associated with copper solutions such as DSL”.
