Internet Optimised for Business Traffic

4 April 2006

Intelligent IP Management Platform Delivers a Level of Consistency Not Possible with BGP alone

Exponential-e, a leading provider of bespoke Ethernet WANs to enterprises, has enhanced its business-only Internet service, PowerServe, by installing an Internet route optimisation platform on its core infrastructure. The new platform dynamically selects optimum routes across the Internet in real time, improving network speeds and reducing both latency and packet loss.

Since its introduction in February average PowerServe latencies have reduced by around 46% with some routes improving by hundreds of milliseconds. Exponential-e has been able to maintain this level of service because the new platform continuously monitors every variable that could have an affect on network performance in real time, before deciding on the appropriate route to send traffic. This is in contrast to the traditional BGP method, which simply searches router tables to find the least number of network hops needed to reach the intended destination.

Adrian Hobbins, CTO, Exponential-e, commented: “The new system enables us to guarantee that we will continue to deliver our exceptionally high standard of Internet performance, a promise which is vital to those customers that have mission critical business processes that depend upon the public Internet.

“Where BGP is quite crude, basing its decision on the fewest network hops required to reach the end destination, our platform is now constantly monitoring all the factors which can affect network performance. Recent enhancements now include the addition of jitter measurement which is important for any RTP (Real- Time Protocol) flow such as VoIP or Video”.
